A Woman's Prayer
Last Saturday was a phenomenal day in the DMV area. The sun was out and so was the fun. The weather was so perfect, a change from our wishy-washy weather, that everyone wanted to go out and do something. Everyone except for me. No thanks, Love. Enjoy. Blame my parents that I am naturally a homebody. Anywho, I couldn’t stay home, even against my will. Your girl had a ticket for an event in the evening, that her boss treated her to. Dang!
I was invited to watch a documentary called, “She Did That.” It is a documentary about “exploring the journeys of Black women BUILDING legacies, MAKING history & INSPIRING the future” who basically did that! Hence the name. I went in not expecting much, but within minutes of the film, I was literally taking notes in the dark because these women were dropping gems. I would be an idiot to let the knowledge go over my head. The believer in me couldn’t help but chime in a “mmm” and a “yes” every time a one-liner was dropped. This was the Bible study guide for black women entrepreneurs!
Through the film, the executive producer Jenea Bluitt, thanked God for manifesting this vision He gave her and how she was glad she was obedient, despite the obstacles.
And I thought to myself, “This was an amazing way to end Women’s History Month!”
I don’t think I ever paid Women’s History Month any attention. In the past, I just liked all the inspirational feminine quotes as I mindlessly scrolled down my feed on Instagram. Once in a while, I would share some quotes or memes via DM. But nothing out the norm. But this year has been a different tune.
This year, I have seen the hand of God move in my life and in the life of my sisters. I watched as my friends trusted God with an area in their lives and have sought him endlessly in prayer. Months would go by and nothing had changed about the situation. Years would pass, and the situation began to look hopeless to those around them. But yet, their faith never wavered but stand firm. I’ve seen my sisters choose joy over the disappointment.
I’ve heard their prayers for the Lord to act in an area that they believed God to fulfill His promises, but now I’ve seen the hand of God move evidently in that same area!
“Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
Luke 1:45
And within a second, God has changed the course of their lives.
This month, I’ve seen a sister land a full-time job with benefits after years of freelancing, temping and retailing. I’ve seen a sister close in on a house, after abruptly moving in with her family. I’ve seen a sister experience another birthday, and not having to call off to celebrate because she quit her job to an be a full-time entrepreneur. I’ve seen friends who are able to graduate from Law school. I’ve seen a sister get promoted. And much more!
“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
Hebrews 11:6
All month, I was getting bombs dropped. The text messages were just rolling in and the tears of joy were just pouring down. FYI: If you are going to text me good news, make sure I am NOT driving.
And all this was a result of prayer.
Consistent prayer until the saw the hand of God move in their situation.
“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
Mark 11:24
If you don’t know, I can hold a note and a member of the choir. Yesterday, as we sang, “Your great name,” I watched as my best friend was leading the church in worship. And my goodness, she was killing it in 4 in heels. She would make a COGIC grandmother very proud. All we need was the deacon, who would rise from his seat, shaking his head in disbelief. It was that kind of atmosphere.
I turned my head to the right, I noticed her mother, our pastor, in the front row praising the Lord as if was just her in the room. Then the Holy Spirit took me a memory last year March, around this time when it was my friend’s birthday. Her mother shared that she was a few weeks old when she took her to a church service at a neighboring church. There was a worship leader, who sang literally like an angel and was able to shift the room. My pastor, who herself isn’t a worship leader, but is a passionate worshiper, was mesmerized by her voice! She took her daughter to the singer and asked her to pray that this child could sing in ways she couldn’t. And 28 years, here is the same child making demons tremble at the mention of His name. The Holy Spirit whispered, “The Power of prayer.”
Nothing too major happened to me this month, but I am fired up to be consistent in prayer for breakthrough. All these testimonies feel like my own victories. Because for years, I too was not only encouraging them when things were looking hopeless, but I was also contending with God to move and grant their petition.
But enough about us.
What are you trusting God for?
Have you been consistent in prayer about it?
And have you shared it with your community, to also contend with you?
I hope this encouraged you because God also wants to move in your life.
“God is within her, she will not fall”
Psalm 45:6
